As part of our safety program, and in compliance with applicable regulations and standards, all our equipment is inspected on an annual basis (at least) and certified safe for operation.

At City Pumping Ltd., safety is more than a policy, it's a culture. We are committed to building strong foundations not just in concrete, but in the well-being of our people.

Pump Operator Certification

Effective January 1, 2024, concrete pump operators in BC are now required to hold a valid certification for the pump type they currently operate, as per recent changes to the BC Occupational Health & Safety Regulation:

Part 20.26.6 Operator Certification

(2) On and after January 1, 2024, a person must not operate a concrete pump or placing boom at a workplace unless the person

(a) holds a valid concrete pump operator's certificate, issued by the certification authority, for the class or type of concrete pump or placing boom being operated and operates the concrete pump or placing boom in accordance with any conditions set out on the certificate, or

              (b) operates the concrete pump or placing boom

(i) under the supervision of a person who holds a valid concrete pump operator’s certificate for the class or type of concrete pump or placing boom being operated, and

(ii) in accordance with the directions of the certificate holder.

(3) The employer must ensure that a person who operates a concrete pump or placing boom at a workplace complies with subsection (2).

This means that no one may operate a concrete pump (line pumps, boom pumps and placing booms) at a workplace unless they hold a valid concrete pump operator certificate, in accordance with a certification authority approved by WorkSafeBC.

Alternatively, in the case of training new pump operators, the equipment can be operated by someone under the supervision of a certified operator. New employees will then be certified after the required amount of training time, and proven competency, skills and abilities. Competency in performance and operation is determined by City Pumping Ltd. prior to enrolling the pump operator in the CCPO (Certified Concrete Pump Operator) Program administered by the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA). This is the only WorkSafeBC-approved certification program.

This certification program was built by industry and safety professionals to ensure holders of the certification are operating to a standard of high competence – one of safety, environmental consideration, and value. Those who hold this certification have demonstrated theoretical knowledge of concrete pump operations and they have shown they can apply this knowledge by working competently in the field.

City Pumping Ltd. ensures all employees are trained, certified, equipped, and supported to perform their duties safely and confidently. Other training includes WHMIS education and training, BC Hydro power safety training, commercial driver training, and much more.

Pre-pour Site Checks & Assessment

Safety doesn’t come easy, and we follow several procedures designed to keep all personnel on job sites safe. All jobs booked must be booked in advance so that pre-pour site checks (assessments) can be done by one of our experienced professionals to ensure a safe, efficient concrete pour. We examine the job sites’ accessibility, the set-up area, and any potential hinderances or hazards to ensure the correct equipment is sent at pour time.
